Key Responsibilities
- Drafting and prosecuting patent applications across various jurisdictions, including the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) and the European Patent Office (EPO), with a particular emphasis on high-tech and electronics inventions.
- Conducting thorough prior art searches, freedom-to-operate analyses, and patentability assessments to provide strategic and commercially astute advice to clients.
- Providing expert counsel to a diverse client base, ranging from innovative start-ups to multinational corporations, on all aspects of patent law and strategy, tailored to their specific business objectives.
- Managing and growing significant patent portfolios, ensuring robust and comprehensive protection for clients' intellectual assets throughout their lifecycle.
- Preparing for and attending Oral Proceedings at the EPO (Examinations, Oppositions, Appeals) and other relevant hearings, representing clients effectively and persuasively.
- Engaging in proactive client relationship management, fostering strong, long-term partnerships, and identifying opportunities for new business development and client growth.
- Conducting IP due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, and investment activities, assessing the strength, validity, and value of patent portfolios.
- Monitoring technological developments and changes in IP law, providing proactive, up-to-date advice to clients and internal teams to maintain competitive advantage.
- Mentoring junior colleagues and contributing to the firm's knowledge sharing initiatives, particularly for fully qualified attorneys, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Must be a part-qualified Patent Attorney actively working towards full qualification (CPA/EPA) or already a fully qualified UK and/or European Patent Attorney.
- Possess a strong academic background, typically a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant high-tech discipline such as Electronics Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Telecommunications, Software Engineering, or a closely related scientific or engineering field.
- Demonstrable experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications, ideally with a significant focus and proven track record within the high-tech or electronics sectors.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical and legal concepts clearly, concisely, and persuasively to diverse audiences.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities, coupled with meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in all aspects of work.
- Proven capability to manage a varied and demanding caseload independently, prioritising effectively to meet strict deadlines and client expectations.
- Familiarity with UK and European patent procedures and practices is essential, alongside a sound understanding of international IP frameworks.
- A proactive and commercially aware approach, with a genuine interest in client engagement, relationship building, and contributing to the firm's business development efforts.
