Key Responsibilities
- Drafting and prosecuting patent applications for a diverse range of mechanical engineering inventions before the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO), the European Patent Office (EPO), and internationally.
- Conducting comprehensive patentability searches, freedom-to-operate analyses, and infringement assessments to provide strategic advice to clients.
- Providing expert intellectual property advice and guidance to clients on all aspects of patent law, including portfolio management, licensing, and commercialisation strategies.
- Representing clients in opposition and appeal proceedings before the EPO, advocating for their interests with precision and strategic insight.
- Engaging directly with inventors and in-house counsel to understand complex technical innovations and translate them into robust patent claims.
- Managing deadlines, client expectations, and case files efficiently and effectively, ensuring the highest standards of accuracy and professionalism.
- Collaborating with colleagues across different technical groups and international offices, fostering a collegiate and supportive working environment.
- Staying abreast of the latest developments in mechanical engineering technologies and intellectual property law to provide cutting-edge advice.
- Contributing to business development initiatives, including presenting at seminars and building client relationships.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Fully qualified UK and/or European Patent Attorney, possessing a valid professional qualification.
- A strong academic background, typically a degree (BSc, MSc, or PhD) in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline such as Aerospace Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechatronics, or Robotics.
- Demonstrable experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications within the mechanical engineering sector.
- Proven ability to provide clear, concise, and commercially astute intellectual property advice to a diverse client base.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for detail and the ability to grasp complex technical concepts quickly.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of articulate expression in both technical and legal contexts.
- A proactive approach to client management and business development, with a commitment to building long-term relationships.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as an integral part of a high-performing team.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage a busy caseload effectively, prioritising tasks to meet deadlines.
