Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior Patent Attorneys and Partners in all aspects of patent prosecution, including drafting and filing patent applications for a diverse range of chemical innovations.
  • Conduct comprehensive patentability, freedom-to-operate (FTO), and infringement searches and analyses, providing clear and concise reports.
  • Prepare and respond to official communications from patent offices (e.g., examination reports, office actions) in the UK, Europe, and internationally, under supervision.
  • Participate in client meetings, understanding their technical innovations and commercial objectives to provide tailored intellectual property advice.
  • Draft detailed specifications, claims, and other essential patent documentation with precision and clarity.
  • Undertake legal and technical research to support patent cases, including analyzing prior art and relevant case law.
  • Contribute to the strategic management of client patent portfolios, ensuring robust protection for their intellectual assets.
  • Maintain meticulous records and manage deadlines efficiently, adhering to all procedural requirements.
  • Actively engage in ongoing professional development and training to advance towards full qualification as a UK and/or European Patent Attorney.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A strong academic background, including a degree (2:1 or above) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or a closely related scientific discipline.
  • Demonstrable experience working as a Part-Qualified Chemistry Patent Attorney within a reputable private practice or in-house IP department.
  • Significant progress towards achieving UK and/or European Patent Attorney qualification, having successfully passed a number of relevant examinations.
  • A deep understanding of patent law principles and intellectual property procedures.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical and legal concepts clearly and concisely.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with a meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • A genuine passion for science and technology, coupled with a keen interest in intellectual property law.
