About This Role
The Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology Basel (IOB) is a world-renowned research institute dedicated to pioneering advancements in understanding vision and its diseases, and developing innovative new therapies for vision loss. We bridge the gap between fundamental molecular research and clinical application, fostering a dynamic and collaborative environment where scientific discovery directly impacts patient care. At IOB, we believe in nurturing talent, valuing expertise, challenging abilities, and expanding knowledge, providing a stimulating setting for ambitious researchers.
We are actively seeking an experienced and highly motivated Research Associate to join our esteemed Translation Group, led by Dr. Bence György. This pivotal role is integral to our mission, focusing specifically on cutting-edge cell therapy translational research aimed at restoring and preserving vision. The successful candidate will play a critical role in designing, executing, and analyzing complex experiments, contributing directly to the development of novel therapeutic strategies. You will work within a vibrant interdisciplinary team, collaborating with both basic scientists and clinicians, to translate groundbreaking discoveries from the bench to potential clinical applications. This is an exceptional opportunity for a dedicated scientist to make a tangible impact in the field of ophthalmology and contribute to life-changing therapies for patients suffering from blinding diseases.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, plan, and independently execute a wide range of experiments related to cell therapy and translational research, with a strong focus on ocular applications.
- Perform advanced mammalian cell culture, including isolation, expansion, differentiation, and characterization of various primary cells, induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), and other relevant cell lines.
- Apply and develop molecular biology techniques such as PCR, qPCR, Western blotting, ELISA, cloning, and gene expression analysis to investigate cellular mechanisms and therapeutic efficacy.
- Utilize cell biology assays including flow cytometry, immunofluorescence microscopy, viability assays, proliferation assays, and functional assays to assess cell properties and therapeutic outcomes.
- Maintain meticulous and accurate laboratory records, including detailed experimental protocols, results, and data analysis in electronic lab notebooks.
- Analyze and interpret complex scientific data, prepare comprehensive reports, and present findings effectively to the team and broader scientific community.
- Contribute to the optimization and troubleshooting of experimental protocols and development of new assays and methodologies.
- Ensure strict adherence to laboratory safety protocols, quality control standards, and relevant ethical guidelines.
- Manage laboratory reagents, supplies, and equipment, ensuring efficient and organized lab operations.
- Collaborate effectively with team members, principal investigators, and external partners, fostering a highly collaborative and supportive research environment.
- Actively participate in scientific discussions, journal clubs, and group meetings, contributing to the intellectual life of the Translation Group and IOB.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or a closely related life science discipline.
- A minimum of 2-5 years of hands-on laboratory experience in an academic or industry research setting, with significant exposure to cell therapy or translational research projects.
- Demonstrated expertise in aseptic mammalian cell culture techniques, including handling of primary cells, stem cells (e.g., iPSCs), or ocular cell types.
- Proficiency in a wide array of molecular biology techniques, such as PCR, qPCR, Western blotting, and ELISA.
- Experience with various cell biology assays, including immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, and cell viability/proliferation assays.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to critically evaluate data and troubleshoot experimental challenges.
- Excellent organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail in experimental design and record-keeping.
- Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced research environment.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English, essential for documenting experiments, preparing reports, and presenting findings.
- A high degree of motivation, proactive work ethic, and a genuine passion for scientific discovery and translational research.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as a collaborative member of a diverse and interdisciplinary team.
- Familiarity with data analysis software (e.g., GraphPad Prism, FlowJo) and general laboratory information management systems is highly desirable.
